Little Differences

Sometimes it’s the little things that let you know that you’re in another country. Here are a few things we’ve noticed in the past couple of months:
  • One hour television programs start at half past the hour rather than on the hour.
  • Sushi rolls are not sliced and instead are left as long rolls (which actually works much better for sushi on the run).
  • Hand dryers actually have the heat and force necessary to dry your hands quickly (funny for a country where the weather will also do that).
  • Dim Sum is called Yum Cha.
  • Sinks in offices are often fitted with very cold water for drinking and boiling hot water for tea. Makes you wonder if anyone still uses the regular "not really cold" and "tepid" taps anymore.
  • The letter "H" is pronounced "haitch".
  • There are no pennies! Bills are rounded down or up to the nearest multiple of five cents.
  • Beetroot is a common sandwich topping, and pumpkin is a common pizza topping.
