The Courier Mail…

Once upon a time, Brisbane had two papers, the Brisbane Courier and the Daily Mail. We have to assume that back in those halcyon days, at least one of them had some quality journalism. Alas, the newspaper scene in Brisbane is reduced to only one local paper, the Courier-Mail.

There is generally in inverse relationship between journalistic quality and the font size of the headlines, and the Courier Mail uses 100 point font. It follows the world-wide Rupert Murdoch formula of sensationalist news, excessive gossip, and extensive sports coverage, all with a hint of a right-wing slant. The only other papers available locally are the national “Australian” (also a Rupert Murdoch publication), and the Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age, which we sometimes get on the weekend for a breath of fresh air (and 5-grid Sudoku!).
