Cape Tribulation

Cape Tribulation - where the World Heritage Listed rainforest meets the World Heritage Listed reef! We spent a delightful couple of days camping in the rainforest, walking along the beach, searching for nocturnal animals on a guided night walk and sourcing the best local ice cream (wattle seed is awesome!).

Cape Tribulation is the end of the road in North Queensland - only a 4x4 track continues on past it. It was called Tribulation by Captain Cook (then Lieutenant Cook) in 1770 when he sailed past, wrecking his boat on the reef. He put in a bit north of here to make some hasty repairs. You hear a lot about Cook in Australia, but he didn't actually get off his boat very often - just sailed around naming things. Staying on the boat worked well for him - when he got off one time in Hawaii, he was killed and eaten.
