The Fly, Part Two

One more thing about the Australian fly - DEET is meaningless to them. Our 30% DEET, which was enough to send the malarial mosquitoes of Central America packing, has no effect whatsoever on the Australian fly. In fact, flies have been known to dance in pools of DEET on our skin just after application.

We met some British backpackers who let us know that the uncut DEET that they got off the streets of Southeast Asia, the kind that makes your face swell up, also has no effect. We have almost purchased those ridiculous fly nets that you can wear around your head. Almost...

... or how about one of those hats with the corks attached on strings all around the brim? The purpose of the corks is to allow you some respite from the 'Australian salute'.
