On the Backpacker Trail

On the way from Brisbane to Cairns it seemed like every second vehicle we saw was a backpacker vehicle - either a Ford Falcon Stationwagon stuffed with packs and gear or a Wicked Campervan. These vans are budget rental vans sporting very individual paint jobs. Our favourite is done up like the "Mystery Machine" with the slogan "What would Scooby Doo?" Some feature impressive aboriginal-style art, while others have a musical theme - pictures of the Beach Boys, with the slogan "Good Vibrations", or Midnight Oil, with "Beds are Burning" - particularly apt in a camper van. We've become "Vanspotters", and are planning to email the company for a full list so we can check them off as we see them. We're thinking of getting one when we're in New Zealand.
