Uluru Up Close

We took a great tour partway along the base of Uluru, where a ranger told us a bit about the plant and animal life of the area, plus some of the creation stories that make this a special place for the local Aboriginals.

There are lots of holes and caves around the base, that were created by a giant marsupial mole.

There were lots of other formations and pockets around the rock; something you don't see or think about when looking at it from a distance, or on a postcard.

Some sites we weren't permitted to take pictures of, as they are sacred sites. Nobody can tell you precisely why, as this knowledge is given only to initiated men (or women, depending on the site).

We did the full walk around the base (in 37 degree weather), and saw most of the rock up close.
