Aussie Icon - The Barbie

The Barbecue is an institution in Australia. We had no idea there could be so many ways to grill a steak. Besides the gas BBQ that we would find familiar, they have wood-fired barbecues, charcoal Weber barbecues, and our favourite, the Aussie Roadside BBQ.

Almost anywhere you stop in Australia, you will find these stainless steel grills (gas fired underneath), where for free anyone can fire it up and grill their meal. They are usually conveniently located at the beach, in a park, or at your campsite. We think that in Australia the right to grill meat is in the constitiution.

Incidentally, Australians are mortified at the "Throw another shrimp on the Barbie" quote from the old tourism ads. Their word for the crustacean in question is "prawn", plus they think Paul Hogan is a bit of a knob.
