Kal

Kalgoorlie is a big hole, and proud of it.

They call it the SuperPit (try saying it in a voice like a monster truck announcer) and it is massive - the little toy trucks in the photo are in fact 220-tonne ore haulers. For some reason, the cost of tires was a common stat in tourist publications, and these babies cost $26,000 each and are twice as tall as a person. The pit is re-working the same area that the old underground gold mines have been going over for the past 100 years, so the pit is honeycombed with old shafts and voids - but they're still making money!
