It was the scene of the only Australian news story to make it outside the country: the Beaconsfield mine collapse, where two Australian miners were trapped underground for two weeks, then eventually rescued.
The two guys got a big TV deal to tell their story, plus a book deal. I can't imagine that would be too exciting: "Day 11. It was cold and dark and uncomfortable. Brant farted."
