Bridge Climb

We climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge!

They've been taking people up the bridge for a few years now, and they just started a second tour, where you walk up the lower arch instead of the upper one, getting a closer look at rivets, joints, and the like. They brand it as a "Discovery" tour (our guide referred to it as the Disco tour), for engineers and the like, but the real reason they do it is that the main tour is so popular that they are at capacity, and needed to find a way to get more people on the bridge. We wore safety belts clipped in to a slider that was attached to a cable the entire way up - we couldn't fall off if we had wanted to - although we heard a story about a worker who jumped off on a dare, and lived.

Incidently, the Sydney Harbour is the standard unit of measurement for large volumes of water in Australia. We were given the volume of lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and inlets all around Australia in terms of how many Sydney Harbours it would take to fill them. I wonder if Australians actually have any conception of what the volume of Sydney Harbour is (562,000 megalitres, if you're curious), or if they just know it's rather large, and leave it at that.
