We couldn't park our van "Priscilla" anywhere near Bondi Beach, or even the next beach down, Coogee. We kept driving and eventually ended up at Maroubra Beach - which turned out to be better than either of them! It is much larger, just as nice, less crowded, has parking for vans, and the weekend we were there, had a beach cricket competition! We even saw the Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard, who threw the first ball. That's him in the white shirt sitting under the middle umbrella:

The
competition was actually mainly a promotional event for a beer company. XXXX (pronounced Fourex) is the most popular beer in Queensland, and heavily advertised on pubs, billboards, and sports stadiums. When we first arrived in Brisbane, we didn't know this, and were surprised at the amount of porn in the city.

The competition feaured retired cricket stars playing a particularly relaxed version of the game. The crowd was reminded to go and get a nice cold one every few minutes, and the players took to signing autographs while they were fielding. A great Aussie experience!
